Ophelia Exiting

The center of Tropical Storm Ophelia is weakening as it moves slowly north through Eastern Virginia tonight. It will turn toward Delaware Sunday afternoon. We are in a cooler brisk NW flow warping around the storm system. In the storms wake, Sunday will be warmer and pleasant. Monday will be even warmer. After Monday, an upper=level low in the Ohio Valley and Eastern Great Lakes plus high pressure in Eastern Canada pushing a cool, damp wedge down the east side of the Appalachians. Tuesday through Thursday will be rather cool, damp, and gray.

The 2024 Blue Ridge Calendars
The 2024 Blue Ridge Calendar is a work of art thanks to amazing photographers and a talented graphic designer. It captures the essence of the climate, terrain, scenery, and creatures great and small of the Southern Appalachians. It's available at RaysMarketplace.Com and dozens of retailers across Western North Carolina.

Forecast Discussion

The center of Ophelia is now in Eastern Virginia, weakening to a tropical depression. It continues to move slowly north and then will turn NE Sunday. Precipitation was very limited in the North Carolina mountains, limited stray light showers in the most northwestern three counties. Clouds decrease over a breezy Saturday evening.

Drier, warmer weather gets a 48 hour hold on our weather Sunday and Monday. Clouds increase late Monday.

You'll need your low beam headlights after Monday... An upper-level low stalls in the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes Tuesday through Thursday. High pressure centered in Eastern Canada will push a wedge of cool air down the east side of the Appalachians. It's a classic "wedge" set up with the Blue Ridge region (east) cooler/cloudier/foggier/wetter than the west side of the Appalachians.

The wedge begins to break down late Thursday, and some sun may return Friday with moderating temperatures.
