On Friday, March 19th there will be a landscape educational workshop sponsored by both Avery and Watauga County Cooperative Extension Centers, and by the Western North Carolina Horticulture Association. This meeting is to provide educational opportunities to the Landscape professional in the mountain region. Educational topics include calibration, finance management, Business planning, Diseases on Ornamentals in the Landscape, How to correct someone else's installation mistake, and accounting 101. It has been approved for 1 hour of pesticide credit for A,B,G,H,I,K,M,O,T and 2 hours for L,N,D,X. There is a maximum of 75 participants.

A meeting for military mothers will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at the National Guard Amory at 2:00. The meeting will be held at the NC National Guard Armory 274 Hunting Hills Lane, Boone, NC. Hunting Hills Lane is off State Farm Road near the hospital. The meeting will be cancelled if there is inclement weather.

Explore the wonders of plants and gardens! In this workshop we will start a Tickle-Me plant. Attendees and parents will also receive inspiration, resources and ideas for planting a garden at home. Diabetes is a chronic disease that has the potential to cause serious complications such as blindness, kidney damage, cardiovascular disease, and lower limb amputation; however, diabetes is manageable and people with diabetes can lower the occurence of these and other diabetes complications by controlling blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipids. A 12-week session of Tai Chi will begin on Thursday, April 1st at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center, instructed by Tim Winecoff.
HIDEThe class will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30 pm and is open to beginner and intermediate students. A 6:30 class for intermediate students may be scheduled if needed. Appalachian State University will sponsor an SAT Prep class beginning in April.
HIDEConferences and Institutes, a division of Appalachian State University, will be sponsoring an SAT Prep class beginning April 13. The class meets for two weeks, from 6-9pm on Tuesday and Thursday, and from 9am-2:30pm on Saturday. This class is taught by experienced educators, and provides an opportunity for students planning to take the SAT test to sharpen critical reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills, and review algebra, geometry, and word problems. The written essay will be discussed and students will be given feedback on their writing. There is also a section on test taking anxiety and problem solving strategies. HIDEThe 13th Annual Catawba Valley Hamfest is sponsored by the Western Piedmont Amateur Radio Club. Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called "hams," use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public services, recreation and self-training. Amateur Radio Operators around the world provide Emergency Communications for many disaster events Including the Haiti Earthquake, and the Blizzard of 2010. When telephone and power outages happen Ham operators provide communications in and out of disaster zones. When 911 services fail Ham operators standby for emergency traffic. Todays modern Amateur Radio Operator or Ham, uses many devices to get the message out. Ham operators were wireless before wireless was cool tracing its roots to the late 1800's and early 1900's. The Catawba Valley Hamfest and Computer Show will be free to students under 12, Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the Door. All proceeds are to cover cost of fairgrounds. Dealers from around the nation will display computers, amateur radio equipment, as well as police and fire communications equipment.

Researchers at the Appalachian State Department of Psychology are recruiting participants aged 60-85 for a study about Autobiographical memory.
HIDEThe study involves one, 2 hour long visit to the ASU Institute for Health and Human services. During the visit, participants will complete several questionnaires about their thoughts, feelings, and general health, as well as assessments of verbal and thinking abilities. The Watauga County Project on Aging and Watauga Medical Center will be offering free health screening clinics to residents of Watauga County age sixty and older. The clinics will be held at the Western Watauga Community Center on Thursday, March 4th and Thursday, April 15th.
HIDEThe screening will consist of a comprehensive metabolic panel, hemoglobin, hematocrit, lipid profile, urine analysis, medical history, teaching breast self-examinations and symptoms of prostrate cancer, visual acuity, glaucoma, height, weight, blood pressure, and distribution of educational materials. Do you know someone who is on Medicare and needs assistance in paying for their prescription drugs? Medicare beneficiaries may be eligible for the federal Extra Help low income subsidy (LIS) program if he/she has limited income and resources.
HIDEThe Extra Help program can increase cost savings by paying for all or part of the month premiums, annual deductibles, and provide lower prescription co-payments under a Medicare prescription drug plan. To qualify for Extra Help, the annual income must be limited to $1,353.75/month for an individual ($1,821.25/month for a married couple living together). Additionally, the total resources must be limited to $12,510 for an individual ($25,010 for a married couple living together). The resources do not include a primary residence or a vehicle. If you believe someone you know may qualify for the Extra Help program, please encourage them to apply on-line at www.socialsecurity.gov, or contact Social Security toll free at 800-443-9354. They may also contact the Watauga County Project on Aging at 265-8090 for assistance in completing an application.

Kappa Delta at Appalachian State University will be hosting its 18th annual All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Dinner at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center on Friday, March 19th, from 5:00-9:00pm. Tickets are $5 in advance and at the door. Our goal is to raise $10,000! All proceeds go to Watauga Children's Council and Prevent Child Abuse America.
HIDEKappa Delta's pancake dinner is one of the largest philanthropy events on Appalachian's campus. Each year we raise over $7,000, and this year we want to make it $10,000. We always have a great response on campus, and we want a better on in the community. %80 of the proceeds we make will go to the Watauga Children's Council, and the remaining %20 will go to Prevent Child Abuse America. For $5, everyone will get all-you-can-eat pancakes, a drink and refills, and their choice of pancake toppings. There will be a DJ and a raffle.
