Forecast Last Updated at Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 6:19AM

Nuisance Precip; Cold Coming

We’ve got periods of light rain or sprinkles, starting as a wintry mix today, although total precipitation amounts should only be a couple tenths of an inch (or less). Colder air invades tonight and there could be a few flurries overnight. Sunshine returns on Sunday, but it will be cold and windy. The coldest part of this forecast is Monday and Tuesday, followed by moderation.

What is the best way to enjoy southern Appalachian scenery all year long? The RaysWeather.Com Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar of course. Order online anytime or visit these fine retailers in Western NC to pick up your copy today.

Forecast Discussion

A cold front is scheduled to push across the mountains later tonight. Ahead of the front, the cold air is getting dislodged, and that is usually a precipitation-making process. This time, we expect a spotty wintry mix changing to rain before ending as a few snow flurries later tonight along with some mountaintop rime. This is just a nuisance-level wintry event and simply won’t amount to much. If this were politics, it would be called a 'nothing-burger'. :)

Sunday turns sunny after a stray early flurry, but windy and colder. A reinforcing shot of very cold air arrives for Monday and Tuesday. A potent upper level disturbance will pivot through Monday night, but it’s moisture starved. Still, we have introduced some powdery snow flurries into the forecast for Sunday night and Monday morning ahead of this feature. The big story will be the arrival of temperatures that will be 10-degrees or more below normal for a change.

Dry weather will be with us for Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures steadily moderate. New low-pressure could bring rain to the mountains by Friday afternoon or Friday night.
