...AN AREA OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL AFFECT ALLEGHANY...WEST CENTRAL SURRY...NORTHERN WILKES...WATAUGA AND CENTRAL ASHE COUNTIES IN NORTHWESTERN NORTH CAROLINA... Until 930 PM EDT At 825 PM EDT, strong thunderstorms were developing from near Boone to Elkin...drifting slowly north northwest. Pea size hail is possible with these storms. Very heavy rainfall can be expected with these storms resulting in minor flooding in the areas of heaviest rainfall. Locations impacted include... Boone... Sparta... Jefferson... West Jefferson... and Traphill. This includes The following Location Appalachian State University. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.
