Opening Day for Hatchery Supported Trout Waters is Right around the Corner
by Kevin Hining

Latest Update: March 18, 2013

At 7 a.m. on Saturday April 6th, approximately 1,100 miles of Hatchery Supported streams and several lakes and ponds will open to fishing across western North Carolina.

Hatchery Supported Trout Waters are managed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and are stocked routinely between March and August with hatchery reared rainbow, brown, and brook trout. While fishing on Hatchery Supported waters, anglers can harvest up to seven trout per day, with no size limit or bait restrictions. All Hatchery Supported waters are marked by green-and-white signs (see image on left).

During 2013, NCWRC staff will stock nearly 894,000 trout in Hatchery Supported waters. The majority of these fish (96%) will average 10 inches in length, but 4% of the trout stocked will exceed 14 inches in length.

Please visit the NCWRC website at www.ncwildlife.org for additional trout fishing information. Some of the resources available include a complete listing of all Hatchery Supported waters, maps, weekly stocking updates, summaries of the number and species of trout stocked, etc.

Trout are only stocked into waters where public fishing is allowed. Many of these waters are located on private land, and opportunities for fishing are only available through the support and generosity of landowners. It’s extremely important for anglers to respect the property that they are fishing on and to remember that landowners can remove public access to these waters if they feel their property is being misused.

Anglers can help prevent the loss of public fishing opportunities by:
• Respecting private property and landowners at all times
• Removing trash and litter from fishing and parking areas
• Parking only in designated areas and never blocking driveways and gates
• Reporting wildlife violations by calling 1-800-662-7137

Feel free to call or email me if I can provide any additional information.

Thanks and best of luck fishing,

Kevin
