Pattern Flip

Since early December, strong high pressure in the Eastern Pacific produced a cross-polar flow flooding the middle and eastern U. S. with very cold air. We have had only two breaks in the pattern in six weeks. That pattern flips now. There's no major arctic intrusion in the foreseeable future. Don't expect spring, but do expect generally kinder, gentler weather. The "mild up" begins today and continues through the weekend. (However, valleys will be cold the next couple nights.) The only other issue of note is a windy Saturday. The next front arrives Monday night with rain followed by cooler weather.

Forecast Discussion

We have been advertising a pattern flip beginning today. It's here. Milder air arrives from the South putting an end to bitterly cold weather for now. We are not flipping to spring; we're only half way through winter. However, there's no an arctic outbreak in sight.

Gradually milder weather arrives as high pressure shifts east into the Atlantic. Cold ground and mostly clear skies will keep valleys cold tonight and Saturday night.

A front arrives from the northwest Monday night. Rain develops late Monday afternoon and continues Monday night.

Cooler air arrives behind the front with seasonal temperatures Tuesday through Thursday. Tuesday looks rather windy.
