Take in the Sun

Make the most of the sunshine today because it will be in short supply next week. Temperatures are pleasant after a chilly start. Sunday is relatively pleasant as well, but clouds increase. Rain develops by sunrise Monday. Monday will be cloudy, foggy, rainy, and chilly. Tuesday is not much nicer; then showers linger into Wednesday with slightly warmer temperatures. Looking toward Merlefest Thursday through Sunday, expect cooler than average temperatures. We cannot rule out a stray shower Thursday, Friday, or Sunday.

Voting is underway in the 2019 Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar Photo Contest. We received over 700 entries in the contest (the most ever). Many thanks to all the photographers for the great response. Voting will continue until May 1, 2018.

Forecast Discussion

High pressure moves across the Eastern U. S. today and Sunday. It then will be centered off the Northeast Coast early next week with a cool wedge developing into the Southern Appalachians. Next week is dominated by a trough in the Eastern U. S. with a couple surface lows rounding its base in the Southeast, keeping our weather unsettled.

The weekend is pleasant after a cool start. Clouds increase Sunday.

The first surface low makes a slow path through Mississippi (Sunday), Alabama (Monday), and South Carolina (Tuesday) before heading northeast. Monday is a gray, raw washout--clouds, foggy, chilly, soaking rains. Tuesday is only slightly better. Showers linger into the daytime Wednesday. Wednesday will be slightly warmer.

The trough with cool air aloft keeps clouds and the threat of a shower in play Thursday and Friday. If Merlefest is on your mind (and it should be), think cooler than average temperatures and a stray shower possible Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. We'll be warily watching that second low near the Gulf Coast later in the weekend.
