Rain Heavy At Times Tonight; Turning Colder Wednesday

Low pressure moving west of the Appalachians toward the Ohio Valley is bringing tons of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Rain will continue heavy at times tonight into Wednesday. 2"-3" rain totals will be common with isolated higher amounts by Wednesday morning. A cold front will move through Wednesday resulting in falling PM temperatures. Snow showers are expected Wednesday night and Thursday with light accumulation at higher elevations and in western upslope regions (along the TN/NC line) tapering to a dusting at most in the eastern lower elevations (eastern Ashe and Alleghany County).

Forecast Discussion

Copious amounts of moisture are being pulled out of the Gulf ahead of low pressure moving into the Ohio Valley as a cool wedge worked its way down the east side of the Appalachians today. Tonight, rain will continue with rising overnight temperatures. Rain will end around noon Wednesday as a cold front moves through. Expect heavy rain at times tonight with a rumble of thunder not out of the question.

Colder air will arrive Wednesday afternoon and strengthen its grip on the region through Thursday. A northwest flow snow shower event will begin Wednesday night lasting into the afternoon Thursday. Accumulations of 1"-2" for most is expected but ranging from around 2"-4" at higher elevations and western upslope regions near the TN/NC line taping to a dusting in the far eastern sections of the mountains (eastern Ashe and Alleghany Counties).

Friday looks mostly clear and not as cold by afternoon.

A weak front will move through late Saturday bring rain showers mostly in the afternoon. Colder air will follow the front with snow flurries possible Saturday night. Sunday looks mostly clear and rather cold. Monday will have more clouds and near-normal temperatures.
