Milder Weekend

After a numbingly-cold Friday with a few snow flurries, temperatures will modify a bit this weekend. We’ll enjoy lots of sunshine today, but clouds return on Sunday afternoon. We may have some spotty light rain late Sunday into Monday, but very little meaningful rainfall is expected. Unseasonably mild weather culminates Monday and Tuesday, before backing off thereafter.

Monday is the last day to order a 2018 Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar at RaysMarketplace.Com and be assured delivery by Christmas. The 2018 Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar is packed with great photography and climate information for the Southern Appalachians. It's the perfect low-cost "From the Mountains" Christmas Gift. Of course, you can also purchase these calendars at many retail outlets across the region. Click here for a list of stores.

Forecast Discussion

Surface high pressure sits atop the region today, but will shift off the coast on Sunday. This will turn the winds more southerly, and set the stage for a slow moderating trend that will culminate early next week.

Expect plenty of sunshine today with rather seasonal mid-December temperatures. A dying cold front will limp into the region early next week. Clouds will increase Sunday afternoon out ahead of this feature. The Gulf of Mexico is rather cut off, so moisture transport into the front is minimal. As a result, we expect very limited rainfall from this system late Sunday afternoon and into Monday.

With a mix of clouds and sunshine, Tuesday could possibly be the mildest day left on the December calendar. Then, a compact low-pressure system tracking across the country may bring a wet midweek period to the High Country.

Another slow-moving cold front will arrive toward the end of next week, and could result in wet pre-Christmas weekend. As for our Christmas speculation, a gradual turn to colder weather is expected around or just after Christmas in behind the aforementioned frontal system. It's way premature for a “White Christmas” call, but it does at least look like it will "feel" like Christmas.
