Time to Dry Out

Whew - what a day! Torrential rain, flash flooding, thunder/lighting/wind, it has been a truly remarkable weather day across the High Country. But fortunately, outside of an isolated evening shower, it's all over with. This wave of moisture ran well ahead of a dry front that will move through the Southern Appalachians Tuesday afternoon. Much colder weather arrives Tuesday night and Wednesday. Even a few flurries are possible Wednesday morning (trivia-level stuff at best). Temperatures moderate Thursday and Friday.

The colder weather should put you in the mood for our RaysWeather.Com Fearless Forecast for Winter 2017-2018 Enjoy. Saturday, the Woolly Worm Festival's winning worm, named "Aspen", predicted a cold snowy start to winter (weeks 1-3), a touch of snow in week 4, average temperatures for weeks 5-11 with a little snow in week 10, then a cold and snowy finish for weeks 12-13.

The 2018 Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar is packed with great photography from the RaysWeather.Com Photo Contest. It has climate information for the entire Parkway and includes pages for November/December 2017 so it can be used soon. Get yours at RaysMarketplace.Com or at many retail outlets across the region.

Forecast Discussion

A strong cold front brought torrential rain, flash flooding, strong thunderstorms, and high winds to the High Country. Preliminary rain totals of over 5" have been reported as of Monday evening. The front is pushing east, and the heavy rain is over. An isolated shower remains possible into this evening. Clouds decrease overnight.

Tuesday is a 'tweener--cooler but dry. Then colder air arrives Tuesday night leading to a seasonably cold Wednesday. A few flurries are possible early Wednesday, mainly along the western upslope and at high elevations. You will disappointed only if you expect more. There's far too much chatter "out there" about Wednesday. Tell your friends, "This is a lesson. Don't listen to or spread weather hype. We'll see snow hype on social media all winter long. Ignore it." Blustery winds will accompany the cold outbreak late Tuesday into Wednesday.

As high pressure moves across the Eastern U. S., temperatures moderate Thursday and Friday.

This weekend, another front will sweep east bringing another surge of colder air. Precise timing of its arrival is difficult--a Saturday night arrival is most likely. Expect showers Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. Colder temperatures will be here Saturday night and Sunday.
