NWS Winter Weather Advisory (Watauga County)
HIDE
Winter Weather Advisory issued February 26 at 4:22AM EST until February 26 at 10:00PM EST by NWS Blacksburg
...Mixture of rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow expected across the higher terrain today with limited accumulation.... Colder air will spread into the region from the northeast today as a series of weather systems from the Midsouth track northeast on top of the colder air. Compared to recent events, the air mass in place across the region will be marginally cold enough for winter precipitation. Thus, the winter precipitation today will be confined to higher elevations throughout the region, especially the Blue Ridge, Alleghanys, and Cumberland mountains. Warm temperatures in the 50s and 60s the past couple of days will greatly limit accumulation of winter precipitation in urban areas and lower elevations. Little, if any accumulation of winter precipitation is anticipated at elevations below 2500 ft. ...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM EST THIS EVENING... * WHAT...Mixed wintry precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of locally up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Accumulations of snow, sleet, and ice will be confined mainly to elevations above 2500 ft. * WHERE...Portions of southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina. * WHEN...From 7 AM to 10 PM EST today. * IMPACTS...A slushy mix of sleet and snow will be possible on untreated roads and surfaces at higher elevations. Use caution if planning to travel through higher mountainous terrain and be prepared for areas of minor snow and sleet accumulation in these locations.
