Turning Colder & Windy

Colder air is moving in as temperatures continue to fall this afternoon as a strong west to northwest wind kicks into gear. A reinforcing shot of cold air arrives tonight with a period of light freezing rain or drizzle changing over to flurries and snow showers. There's not much moisture so we don't expect more than a dusting to about 1" for the higher elevations. Flurries and mountaintop snow showers continue Wednesday, but temperatures are marginal and keep it to novelty level excitement. Brighter skies and less cold conditions resume Thursday and Friday.

Why is that 2017 calendar still hanging on your wall? Get into the new year with a 2018 Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar. Buy them online or at many retailers across the region. Forecast Discussion

A cold front moved through late last night and was responsible for the light rain. The front clears the Carolinas coast by this evening as colder air invades from the west. A gusty wind picked up earlier this morning ushering in falling afternoon temperatures.

Very modest amounts of low level moisture arrives tonight on an increasingly brisk northwest. We'll go through a quick spell of freezing rain or drizzle before transitioning to flurries and snow showers overnight. Add a healthy dose of rime ice for the ridges. It won't be much, but this kind of thing can make for sneaky slick roadways.

Flurries and mountaintop snow showers stick around Wednesday, possibly into the evening hours. It's a "show and tell" deal as most of us get several degrees above freezing tomorrow.

High pressure takes hold Thursday and Friday leading to rebounding temperatures and ample sunshine. The high then wedges down the eastern flanks of the Appalachians Saturday as low pressure begins to eject north from the Gulf. Light rain or drizzle/fog develops late Saturday with steadier rain arriving overnight and continuing Sunday ahead of an approaching front. As the front passes to the east Monday morning flurries or snow showers are not out of the question before drying out.
