Forecast Last Updated at Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at 11:35AM

Well... Maybe

The big weather news today is Maria pummeling Puerto Rico. See the Forecast Discussion Section for details on Jose and Maria (sounds like a pair on Dancing with the Stars).
Our weather is a stark contrast to the Eastern Caribbean. We have not had any rain since Irma, and there's not much in the foreseeable future. However, isolated afternoon showers are possible today and Thursday. An afternoon shower is not impossible Friday, but the risk is too small to put in the forecast box. The weekend through mid next week is warm and dry.

The 2018 Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar is packed with great photography from the RaysWeather.Com Photo Contest. It has climate information for the entire Parkway and includes pages for November/December 2017 so it can be used soon. Get yours at RaysMarketplace.Com or at many retails across the region.

Forecast Discussion

Since our weather is as exciting as an episode of "Me, Myself & I", we'll cover Atlantic tropical systems first.
* Tropical Storm Jose is trolling the waters southeast of Cape Cod. It barely moves for the next 6 days then fades off the map.
* Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico this morning as a Category 4 storm. The damage left by Irma on top of the ongoing economic crisis in the Commonwealth already leaves Puerto Rico vulnerable. Maria will be truly terrible. The island will need help recovering for years. Maria will emerge from Puerto Rico a somewhat weaker storm moving northeast (north of Hispaniola and brushing the eastern Bahamas). It will be east of Hatteras by Tuesday. We think it will remain off the U. S. Coast, then speed NE by the middle of next week.

The Southern Appalachians remains between the tropical systems well to our east and fronts from the west fade in the Mississippi Valley. We can expect generally dry, warm weather through next Wednesday. However, a weak disturbance combined with increased low-level moisture sparks isolated showers this afternoon and Thursday afternoon.
