Forecast Last Updated at Monday, January 20, 2020 at 6:55AM

Coldest of the Season

Arctic air is draining southwards this morning accompanied by a dusting of fluffy light snow. Snow ends around mid-morning followed by decreasing afternoon clouds. Despite a fair amount of sunshine to finish the day it remains very cold and is easily the coldest day of winter thus far. Temperatures go deep tonight across the board with single digits for the mountain tops. Tuesday is only a hair or two less cold followed by some moderation for the middle of the week.

What is the best way to enjoy southern Appalachian scenery all year long? The RaysWeather.Com Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar of course. Order online anytime or visit these fine retailers in Western NC to pick up your copy today.

Forecast Discussion

The leading edge of these arctic airmasses are often accompanied by a shallow layer of moisture. Such is the case this morning as a very fluffy poof of light snow is with us until 10am or so. Skies clear this afternoon and minus a few extra clouds around overnight we'll hold onto generally clear skies until Thursday as high pressure is the dominating weather feature. Temperatures stay in the deep freezer through Wednesday morning until the high shuffles east inducing a subtle southerly flow. Other than light snow this morning and the "big cold" most of this week is uneventful.

Moisture returns in the form of rain Friday as low pressure moves northeast from Texas. As the low progresses north of us Saturday colder air filters in leading to a changeover to snow Saturday morning. It's too early to get excited about accumulating snowfall Saturday as this is a borderline setup, but the potential is there for some light accumulations. Snow showers and flurries linger into Saturday night and Sunday as a brisk northwest flow tries to keep the hammer down.
